The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkins (#3)
Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco (#2)

A Recipe for Disaster:

1. One cup of decent book prices

2. Sprinkle in a beautiful bookstore

3. Add in one compulsive book buyer

4. Mix them all together

Voila! You’ve got a book haul.

If you’d like to increase the danger level, keep a running wishlist of all the books you’d like to read at some point. That little monster will grow faster than you can blink until one day you innocently walk into a bookstore. You’re wandering around the aisles, picking up books you’ve heard of but you convince yourself you don’t need at the moment. After all, you haven’t read the author’s first series. Or her second. Not to mention that standalone she released last summer. So you’re feeling quite proud of your self-control and your basket is noticeably light. But then —

oh no there’s the book all over booktube

oh no there’s the book you’re missing in a series

oh no there’s the new release you’re semi-interested in

oh no there’s the one book you needed before the newest release in the series

oh no indeed me

I’m determined to finish the Mara Dyer trilogy before I even think about The Becoming of Noah Shaw. If I know myself though, the chances that I’d pick up the first book again without having the whole series in my collection is slim. So really, this was just a reasonable purchase that serves as incentive to keep reading. I spent a copious amount of time deciding between the U.K. and U.S. paperback, but the U.K. one was cheaper even though it wasn’t floppy. (A difficult sacrifice, but alas.)

If I hadn’t heard so many things about Stalking Jack the Ripper, I might have been able to avoid purchasing Hunting Prince Dracula. Curiosity got the best of me, and I bought it only to realize that Maniscalco’s books aren’t companions like I originally thought. Since they follow the same main character, I’ll have to find a copy of the first book. I really hope I’ll enjoy them.

Have you read any of these books? Did you like them?

If you get around to her books, I hope you enjoy them! I remember reading The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer in one day. It was interesting and different back then, so I hope it holds up years later.

Haha, I don’t use the library often, but I feel like that would totally be me too. I’m such a bad procrastinator when it comes to reading.

Haha I love this and its so so true! I want to read the Mara Dyre series myself had hoped to do it this year but think 2018 might be the year! Also i have Jack the Ripper and Dracula books I just don’t have them (a friend picked them up for me at a signing we just haven’t met up yet for me to get them lol) but I have heard great things about the series

  2. Love this post, this recipe seems to apply to me quite frequently and I know I should just avoid the book store, but it’s so hard! I purchased The Becoming of Noah Shaw, but sad to say I haven’t started the Mara Dyer trilogy, hopefully soon. I really want to read Hunting Prince Dracula and I’m determined to finish Jack the Ripper, but I’m not finding it very interesting at the moment.

The Becoming of Noah Shaw is a beautiful book 🙂 I can totally understand the problem with avoiding book stores because even if I manage it, there’s always the internet. I hope that Mara Dyer will be a better experience for you than Stalking Jack the Ripper 🙁 Maybe the payoff of Hunting Prince Dracula will make the lull of reading the first book worth it.
